And We had inspired to Moses, "Travel by night with My servants and strike for them a dry path through the sea; you will not fear being overtaken [by Pharaoh] nor be afraid [of drowning]." 77 So Firaun went after them with his army – therefore the sea enveloped them, the way it did. 78 And Fir'aun (Pharaoh) led his people astray, and he did not guide them. 79 O children of Israel! [Thus] We saved you from your enemy, and [then] We made a covenant with you on the right-hand slope of Mount Sinai, and repeatedly sent down manna and quails unto you, [saying,] 80 [Saying], "Eat from the good things with which We have provided you and do not transgress [or oppress others] therein, lest My anger should descend upon you. And he upon whom My anger descends has certainly fallen." 81 And indeed I am Most Oft Forgiving for him who repented and accepted faith and did good deeds, and then remained upon guidance. 82 ۞ And (it was said): What hath made thee hasten from thy folk, O Moses? 83 He said: "They are close on my footsteps, and I hastened to You, O my Lord, that You might be pleased." 84 He (Allah) said: 'We tempted your nation in your absence, and the Samaritan has misled them into error' 85 With great anger and sorrow, Moses returned to his nation. 'My nation' he said, 'did your Lord not make you a fine promise? Did the time of the covenant seem long to you? Or did you desire that the anger of your Lord should fall upon you so that you failed in your coming to my appointment' 86 They said: "We broke not the promise to thee, as far as lay in our power: but we were made to carry the weight of the ornaments of the (whole) people, and we threw them (into the fire), and that was what the Samiri suggested. 87 So he brought forth for them a calf, a (mere) body, which had a mooing sound, so they said: This is your god and the god of Musa, but he forgot. 88 What! could they not see that it did not return to them a reply, and (that) it did not control any harm or benefit for them? 89
