The Town (Al-Balad)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
۞ I swear by this city, Makkah - 1 And thou shalt be allowed in yonder city 2 And by the begetter and that which he begat, 3 We have certainly created man into hardship. 4 What, does he think none has power over him, 5 He says (boastfully): "I have wasted wealth in abundance!" 6 Does he think that none has observed him? 7 Have We not made for him two eyes? 8 And a tongue and two lips, 9 And showed him two highways (of good and evil)? 10 But he would not try to ascend the steep uphill road... 11 And what shall make thee understand that which the steep is? 12 To free a neck (from the burden of debt or slavery), 13 Or the giving of food in a day of privation 14 An orphan of near relationship 15 or a needy man in misery; 16 And to be of those who believe, and urge upon one another to persevere, and urge upon each other to be kind. 17 Their place will be on the right hand. 18 But those who disbelieve Our revelations, their place will be on the left hand. 19 Over them shall be Fire closing round. 20
