We sent Moses with Our signs to Pharaoh and his nobles. He said, "I am the messenger of the Lord of the Universe," 46 When he showed them Our miracles, they started to laugh at them. 47 although each sign that We showed them was weightier than the preceding one: and [each time] We took them to task through suffering, so that they might return [to Us]. 48 But they said: "O sorcerer, call on your Lord for us in accordance with the compact He has made with you. We shall certainly come to guidance." 49 But when We eased them of the torment, behold! they broke their word. 50 And Fir'awn proclaimed among his people, saying: O my people! is not mine the dominion of Misr and witness yonder rivers flowing underneath me? See ye not? 51 I am surely better than this fellow, who is despicable and can hardly make (his meaning) plain! 52 and why have not armlets of gold been bestowed on him and why is there not a train of angels accompanying him?" 53 Thus he persuaded his people to make light (of Moses), and they obeyed him. Lo! they were a wanton folk. 54 So when they vexed Us, We took vengeance on them, and We drowned them all. 55 We made them a precedent, an example for later peoples. 56
