Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
By the dawn 1 and ten nights (of pilgrimage or the last ten days of Ramadan), 2 And by oath of the even and the odd. 3 And the night when it departs. 4 Truly in that there is an oath for those who possess understanding. 5 Dost thou not consider how thy Lord dealt with (the tribe of) A'ad, 6 Iram of the pillars, 7 The like of which was not created in the lands; 8 And with the Thamud (people), who cut out (huge) rocks in the valley?- 9 And with Pharaoh, lord of stakes? 10 [All of] whom oppressed within the lands 11 And heaped therein mischief (on mischief). 12 So your Lord poured a scourge of punishment over them. 13 Indeed nothing is hidden from the sight of your Lord. 14 As for man, when his Lord tries him by giving him honour and gifts, then he says (puffed up): "My Lord has honoured me." 15 But when He tries him (differently), then straitens to him his means of subsistence, he says: My Lord has disgraced me. 16 No indeed, but you show no kindness to the orphan, 17 or urge one another to feed the destitute? 18 And you readily devour the inheritance with greed. 19 And you love wealth with much love! 20 No! When the earth has been leveled - pounded and crushed - 21 And thy Lord shall come with angels, rank on rank, 22 and Hell is made to appear on that Day, then man will be mindful, but what will being mindful then avail him? 23 He will say, “Alas – if only I had sent some good deeds ahead, during my lifetime!” 24 None can punish as He will punish on that day, 25 And none will bind as He will bind. 26 O thou peaceful soul! 27 Return unto thy Lord, content in His good pleasure! 28 Join My servants. 29 And enter thou My Garden. 30
