The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
ONE who is minded to ask might ask about the suffering which [in the hereafter] is bound to befall 1 Upon the infidels -- which none would be able to repel -- 2 No one can defend him against God, the Lord of the exalted positions. 3 To Him ascend the angels and the Spirit in a day the measure of which is fifty thousand years. 4 Therefore patiently endure, in the best manner (O dear Prophet Mohammed peace and blessings be upon him). 5 They think that it (the Day of Judgment) is far away. 6 But We see it [as] near. 7 The Day that the sky will be like molten brass, 8 The mountains like the tufts of (carded) wool, 9 and no friend will ask about his friend, 10 (Though) they shall be made to see each other. The guilty one would fain redeem himself from the chastisement of that day by (sacrificing) his children, 11 his wife, his brother, 12 and of all the kinsfolk who ever sheltered him, 13 And all who are on the earth; so that this might deliver him. 14 Never! That is indeed a blazing fire. 15 Flaying off the scalp-skin. 16 It will summon whoever turns his back and flees, 17 And collect (wealth) and hide it (from use)! 18 ۞ Indeed, the human was created grudging and impatient. 19 Fretful when evil touches him; 20 and tight-fisted when good fortune visits him, 21 save those that pray 22 Those who are constant in their prayer 23 And those in whose wealth there is a known right, 24 For the beggar and the destitute. 25 who confirm the Day of Doom 26 and go in fear of the chastisement of their Lord 27 Lo! the doom of their Lord is that before which none can feel secure - 28 And those who guard their private parts 29 save from their wives and what their right hands own, then not being blameworthy 30 But those who trespass beyond this are transgressors;- 31 And those who of their trusts and their covenant are keepers. 32 and those who stand by their testimony 33 And those who guard their Salat (prayers) well. 34 They will be honoured in the Gardens of Bliss. 35
