Dawn (Al-Fajr)
30 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Night (Al-Layl) before The Forenoon (Al-Duhaa)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
By the dawn, 1 and ten nights (of pilgrimage or the last ten days of Ramadan), 2 by the even and the odd, 3 And by the night when it departs. 4 There is indeed in them (the above oaths) sufficient proofs for men of understanding (and that, they should avoid all kinds of sins and disbeliefs, etc.)! 5 Seest thou not how thy Lord dealt with the 'Ad (people),- 6 Iram of the pillars, 7 The like of which were not created in the land? 8 And (with) Samood, who hewed out the rocks in the valley, 9 And with Pharaoh of the tent pegs 10 Who terrorised the region, 11 and brought about great corruption therein: 12 So your Lord poured on them different kinds of severe torment. 13 Most surely your Lord is watching. 14 As for man, whenever his Lord tries him and then is gracious and provides good things for him, he says: "My Lord has been gracious to me." 15 whereas, whenever He tries him by straitening his means of livelihood, he says, "My Sustainer has disgraced me!" 16 But nay, nay, [O men, consider all that you do and fail to do:] you are not generous towards the orphan, 17 and do not urge one another to feed the poor, 18 And ye devour heritages with devouring greed. 19 and why do you have an excessive love of riches? 20 Surely when We pound the earth to powder grounded, pounded to dust, 21 And when the command of your Lord comes and the angels row by row, 22 And hell is made to appear on that day. On that day shall man be mindful, and what shall being mindful (then) avail him? 23 He will say: Ah, would that I had sent before me (some provision) for my life! 24 So on that day, no one punishes like He does! 25 And His bonds will be such as none (other) can bind. 26 (On the other hand it will be said): “O serene soul! 27 "Come back thou to thy Lord,- well pleased (thyself), and well-pleasing unto Him! 28 "Enter you, then, among My honoured slaves, 29 And enter thou My Garden. 30
