The chiefs of the people who did not believe and denied the life to come, though We had given them good things of this life to enjoy, (said): "He is only a mortal like you. He eats as you do, and drinks as you drink. 33 "If ye obey a man like yourselves, behold, it is certain ye will be lost. 34 What! does he threaten you that when you are dead and become dust and bones that you shall then be brought forth? 35 ۞ Such a promise will never come true. 36 There exists only our present life: we die and we live [but once], and shall never be raised up again. 37 "He is only a man who invents a lie against Allah, but we are not the ones to believe in him!" 38 He said, "My Lord, support me because they have denied me." 39 He said: In a little while they will most certainly be repenting. 40 And then the blast [of Our punishment] overtook them, justly and unavoidably, and We caused them to become as the flotsam of dead leaves and the scum borne on the surface of a torrent: and so - away with those evildoing folk! 41 Thereafter, after them, We produced other generations; 42 Every nation has an appointed life span. 43 Then We sent Our apostles one after another; whenever there came to a people their apostle, they called him a liar, so We made some of them follow others and We made them stories; so away with a people who do not believe! 44 Then We sent Moses and his brother Aaron with Our signs and a clear authority 45 to the Pharaoh and his nobles. But they behaved proudly and thought themselves superior people. 46 They said: "Shall we believe in two men like ourselves, and their people are obedient to us with humility (and we use them to serve us as we like)." 47 So they rejected them both, and became those who were destroyed. 48 We gave Moses the Book so that they might be guided. 49 We made the son of Mary and his mother a sign, and gave them a refuge on a hillside where there was a hollow and a spring. 50
