And certainly did We send Moses with Our signs to Pharaoh and his establishment, and he said, "Indeed, I am the messenger of the Lord of the worlds." 46 But when he came to them with Our Signs, behold they ridiculed them. 47 even though each sign We showed them was greater than the previous one. We afflicted them with torment so that they might return [to the right path]. 48 And they said [to Musa (Moses)]: "O you sorcerer! Invoke your Lord for us according to what He has covenanted with you. Verily, We shall guide ourselves (aright)." 49 So when We averted the calamity from them, they immediately broke the promise! 50 And the Pharaoh said to his people: "O people, is not mine the kingdom of Egypt and these rivers that flow at my feet? Can you still not comprehend? 51 Or am I [not] better than this one who is insignificant and hardly makes himself clear? 52 Then why have there not been placed upon him bracelets of gold or come with him the angels in conjunction?" 53 So he made his people unsteady, and they obeyed him; surely they were an ungodly people. 54 So when they angered Us, We punished them, and drowned them all. 55 And made them a precedent and example for posterity. 56
