The Town (Al-Balad)
20 verses, revealed in Mecca after Q (Qaaf) before The Comet (Al-Taareq)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
۞ I swear by this city -- 1 – this city wherein you have been rendered violable– 2 And by the giver of birth, and whom he fathered, 3 Assuredly We have created man in trouble. 4 What, does he think none has power over him, 5 (He boasts and shows off) saying, "I have spent a great deal of money (for the cause of God)". 6 Deemest he that none beholdeth him? 7 Have We not made for him a pair of eyes?- 8 And a tongue and two lips, 9 and guided him on the two highways? 10 But he has made no effort to pass on the path that is steep. 11 and what shall teach thee what is the steep? 12 (It is) the freeing of a slave, 13 Or feeding on a day of severe hunger 14 of an orphan near of kin, 15 Or of a homeless needy person! 16 And moreover to be of those who accepted faith, and who urged patience to one another and who urged graciousness to one another. 17 Those are the Companions of the Right. 18 And those who disbelieve in Our signs, they are the Companions of the Left Hand; 19 Upon them shall be a Fire that will hem them in. 20
