The Embryo (Al-Alaq)
19 verses, revealed in Mecca. First revelation of the Quran before The Pen (Al-Qalam)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
Read with the name of your Lord Who created, 1 Created man from a clinging substance. 2 Read! And your Lord is the Most Generous, 3 who, by the pen, taught the human being: 4 He taught the human being what he did not know. 5 Despite this, the human being still tends to rebel 6 whenever he believes himself to be self-sufficient: 7 truly, all will return to your Lord. 8 HAST THOU ever considered him who tries to prevent 9 A bondman when he offers the prayer? 10 Have you thought, if he had been on guidance 11 Or he commandeth piety? 12 Hast thou seen if he denieth (Allah's guidance) and is froward? 13 Does he not know that Allah does see? 14 Nay, if he desist not, We shall most surely drag him down upon his forehead 15 A forelock, lying, sinning. 16 So let him summon his helpmates; 17 [the while] We shall summon the forces of heavenly chastisement! 18 No indeed; do thou not obey him, and bow thyself, and draw nigh. ۩ 19
True are the words of God the Almighty.
