۞ We gave Abraham aforetime his rectitude -- for We knew him -- 51 When he asked his father and his people, "What are these images to which you are so devoted?" 52 They said, “We found our forefathers worshipping them.” 53 He said: "You and your fathers were in clear error." 54 They said, 'What, hast thou come to us with the truth, or art thou one of those that play?' 55 He said: "Nay, your Lord is the Lord of the heavens and the earth, Who created them and of that I am one of the witnesses. 56 "And by Allah, I shall plot a plan (to destroy) your idols after you have gone away and turned your backs." 57 And then he broke those [idols] to pieces, [all] save the biggest of them, so that they might [be able to] turn to it. 58 They asked (on return): "Who has done this to our gods? He is surely a mischief-monger." 59 Some among them said, “We heard a youth speak ill of them – the one called Ibrahim.” 60 They said, "Then bring him here in the sight of all the people, so that they may act as witnesses." 61 They said, "Abraham, was it you who did this to our deities?" 62 He said: But this, their chief hath done it. So question them, if they can speak. 63 So they turned to themselves and said, "Surely ye are the ones in the wrong!" 64 But then they relapsed into their former way of thinking and said: "Thou knowest very well that these [idols] cannot speak!" 65 He said, “What! You worship, instead of Allah, one that neither benefits you nor harms you?” 66 Fie on you and all that ye worship instead of Allah! Have ye then no sense? 67 They said, 'Burn him, and help your gods, if you would do aught.' 68 We said: "O fire, become coolness and safety for Abraham." 69 They had sought to do evil to him, but We caused them to be the worst losers, 70 And We rescued him and Lut towards the land which We have blessed for the entire world. 71 And We bestowed upon him Isaac and Jacob as an additional gift, making each of them righteous. 72 And We made them Imams who guided (people) by Our command, and We revealed to them the doing of good and the keeping up of prayer and the giving of the alms, and Us (alone) did they serve; 73 And Lut! We vouchsafed unto him judgment and knowledge, and We delivered him out of the city which had been working foul deeds; verily they were a people evil, wicked. 74 whereas him We admitted unto Our grace: for, behold, he was among the righteous. 75
