And certainly We created man of clay that gives forth sound, of black mud fashioned in shape. 26 And the jinn, We created aforetime from the smokeless flame of fire. 27 And (remember) when your Lord said to the angels: "I am going to create a man (Adam) from sounding clay of altered black smooth mud. 28 When I have formed him and breathed My spirit into him, fall down in prostration before him," 29 So the angels made obeisance, all of them together, 30 Except Iblis (Satan); he refused to be among those who prostrated. 31 He said: O Iblis! What aileth thee that thou art not among the prostrate? 32 [Iblis (Satan)] said: "I am not the one to prostrate myself to a human being, whom You created from sounding clay of altered black smooth mud." 33 (Allah) said: "Then, get out from here, for verily, you are Rajim (an outcast or a cursed one)." [Tafsir At-Tabari] 34 Upon thee shall rest the curse, till the Day of Doom.' 35 Iblis said: "My Lord! Grant me respite till the Day when they will be resurrected." 36 Allah said: "Then, verily, you are of those reprieved, 37 Until the Day of the time well-known." 38 He said: my Lord! because Thou hast led me to err I will surely make things fairseeming unto them on the earth and will surely seduce them all: 39 "Except Your chosen, (guided) slaves among them." 40 (To which God) said: "This way is right by Me. 41 and you have no authority over My servants except the erring ones who follow you. 42 and for all such, behold, hell is the promised goal. 43 It has seven gates; for every gate there shall be a separate party of them. 44
