The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
Someone has (needlessly) demanded to experience the torment (of God), 1 to those who deny the truth. No power can hinder God 2 From Allah, Owner of the ascending steps. 3 by which the angels and the Spirit will ascend to Him in one Day which will last for fifty thousand years. 4 But be patient (O Muhammad) with a patience fair to see. 5 Verily! They see it (the torment) afar off, 6 Whereas We see it impending. 7 On that Day the heavens shall become like molten brass, 8 And then the mountains shall become like unto wool dyed. 9 and no friend will ask about his friend, 10 (Though) they shall be made to see each other. The guilty one would fain redeem himself from the chastisement of that day by (sacrificing) his children, 11 And his wife and his brother 12 And his family who had stood by him, 13 And all, all that is on earth,- so it could deliver him: 14 Never! That is indeed a blazing fire. 15 Taking away (burning completely) the head skin! 16 It calleth him who turned and fled (from truth), 17 and amassed wealth and hoarded it. 18 ۞ Indeed, mankind was created anxious: 19 Fretful when evil touches him; 20 and tight-fisted when good fortune visits him, 21 except those that pray, 22 and constant in their prayers. 23 And those in whose wealth there is a fixed portion. 24 For him who begs and for him who is denied (good) 25 who confirm the Day of Doom 26 and go in fear of the punishment of their Lord, 27 for, behold, of their Sustainer's chastisement none may ever feel [wholly] secure; 28 who guard their carnal desires 29 except in regard to their spouses and those whom their right hands possess, for in regard to them they are not reproachable, 30 But he who seeks to go beyond this, these it is that go beyond the limits-- 31 who honor their trust and promises, 32 And those who are upright in their testimonies, 33 And those who keep a guard on their prayer, 34 Those shall be in Gardens, high-honoured. 35
