When We said to the angels, "Prostrate yourselves before Adam," they all prostrated themselves, except for Satan, who refused, 116 Then We said: Adam! verily this is an enemy unto thee and thine spouse; so let him not drive forth you twain from the Garden, lest thou be destressed. 117 Behold, it is provided for thee that thou shalt not hunger here or feel naked, 118 And that thou thirstest not therein nor art exposed to the sun's heat. 119 Then Satan whispered to him saying, 'Adam, shall I point thee to the Tree of Eternity, and a Kingdom that decays not?' 120 They both ate of it, and their shameful parts appeared to them, whereupon they began to stitch upon themselves leaves from the Garden. And so it was, Adam erred and disobeyed his Lord. 121 Then his Lord had mercy on him, accepted his repentance and guided him. 122 He said: "Get ye down, both of you,- all together, from the Garden, with enmity one to another: but if, as is sure, there comes to you Guidance from Me, whosoever follows My Guidance, will not lose his way, nor fall into misery. 123 but whosoever turns away from My remembrance, his shall be a life of narrowness, and on the Resurrection Day We shall raise him blind.' 124 He shall say: My Lord! why hast Thou raised me blind and I was a seeing one indeed? 125 (God) will say: "Because Our signs came to you, but you disregarded them. So shall We disregard you this day." 126 Thus We recompense those who are unjust and have no faith in Our revelations. The torment in the life to come will be more severe and last longer. 127 CAN, THEN, they [who reject the truth] learn no lesson by recalling how many a generation We have destroyed before their time? - [people] in whose dwelling-places they [themselves now] walk about? In this, behold, there are messages indeed for those who are endowed with reason! 128
