The Town (Al-Balad)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
۞ I do not (need to) swear by this town (Mecca) 1 – this city wherein you have been rendered violable– 2 And by the begetter and that which he begat, 3 That We created man in toil and trouble. 4 What, does he think none has power over him, 5 saying, 'I have consumed wealth abundant'? 6 Does he think that no one sees him? 7 Have We not given him two eyes, 8 a tongue, and two lips? 9 and guided him on the two paths (of good and evil)? 10 But he did not venture to scale the difficult steep. 11 What could let you know what the height is! 12 It is the setting free of a slave 13 And to feed in the day of hunger. 14 of an orphaned relative 15 Or a poor man cleaving to the dust. 16 And moreover to be of those who accepted faith, and who urged patience to one another and who urged graciousness to one another. 17 They are the people of the right hand (and will succeed). 18 But those who disbelieve in Our verses, they are the Companions of the Left, 19 and the Fire will close in on them. 20
