Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
By the dawn 1 And by ten nights, 2 and the even and the odd, 3 And by oath of the night when it recedes 4 Is there in that an oath for the mindful? 5 Have you not considered how your Lord dealt with Ad, 6 (And) the tall giants of Iram? 7 The like of whom were never created in the realm; 8 And (with) Thamud (people), who cut (hewed) out rocks in the valley (to make dwellings)? 9 And with Pharaoh of the tent pegs 10 Who committed inordinacy in the cities, 11 and caused much corruption in them: 12 and therefore thy Sustainer let loose upon them a scourge of suffering: 13 indeed, your Lord is ever watchful. 14 As for man, when his Lord tests him, through honour and blessings, he says, "My Lord has honoured me," 15 But whenever He trieth him by straitening his means of life, he saith: My Lord despiseth me. 16 Nay! But you treat not the orphans with kindness and generosity (i.e. you neither treat them well, nor give them their exact right of inheritance)! 17 and you do not urge one another to feed the needy, 18 and you greedily devour the inheritance of the weak, 19 and you love wealth with boundless love! 20 Surely when We pound the earth to powder grounded, pounded to dust, 21 And when the command of your Lord comes – and the angels row by row, 22 And Hell, that Day, is brought (face to face),- on that Day will man remember, but how will that remembrance profit him? 23 He shall say: O! would that I had sent before for (this) my life! 24 Upon that day none shall chastise as He chastises, 25 and Allah will bind as none other can bind. 26 O you tranquil soul, 27 Return to your Lord well-pleased (with your blissful destination), well-pleasing (to your Lord). 28 Enter thou among My righteous bondmen! 29 Enter thou My Paradise!' 30
