The chiefs of Pharaoh's people said: Lo! this is some knowing wizard, 109 Who wants to expel you from your land [through magic], so what do you instruct?" 110 The others suggested holding Moses and his brother off and sending to all the cities 111 “To bring all the expert magicians to you.” 112 And the magicians came to Pharaoh and said: 'Shall we have a reward if we win?' 113 He said: "Yes, and moreover you will (in that case) be of the nearest (to me)." 114 They said, "O Moses, either you throw [your staff], or we will be the ones to throw [first]." 115 He answered: "You throw [first]." And when they threw down [their staffs,] they cast a spell upon the people's eyes, and struck them with awe, and produced mighty sorcery. 116 We said to Moses: "Throw down your staff;" and it swallowed up their conjurations in no time. 117 ۞ Thus the truth was upheld, and the falsehood that they practised was exposed. 118 Pharaoh and his men were defeated and put to shame, 119 and the sorcerers prostrated themselves, 120 Crying: We believe in the Lord of the Worlds, 121 The Lord of Musa and Harun. 122 Said Pharaoh, 'You have believed in Him before I gave you leave. Surely this is a device you have devised in the city that you may expel its people from it. Now you shall know! 123 "I will have your hands and feet on alternate sides cut off, and have you all crucified." 124 They said, "Indeed, to our Lord we will return. 125 You would punish us only because we believed in the signs of our Lord when they were shown to us. Our Lord, pour patience upon us, and cause us to die in a state of submission to You." 126
