The Thamud tribe denied the Noble Messengers. 141 When their brother Salih said to them, "Will you not fear Allah? 142 Behold, I am an apostle [sent by Him] to you, [and therefore] worthy of your trust: 143 So fear God and follow me. 144 For this I ask of you no wage; my wage falls only upon the Lord of the Worlds. 145 "Do you think that you will remain here peacefully forever 146 "In gardens and springs. 147 and fields, and [these] palm-trees with slender spathes? 148 carving comfortable houses out of the mountains? 149 Have fear of God and obey me. 150 and pay no heed to the counsel of those who are given to excesses 151 Who work corruption in the land and rectify not. 152 They said: Thou art but one of the bewitched; 153 "Thou art no more than a mortal like us: then bring us a Sign, if thou tellest the truth!" 154 Salih said: "This is a she-camel. There is a day set for her to drink and there is a day set for you to drink. 155 Do not cause her to suffer lest you become subject to the torment of the great day (of Judgment)." 156 Then they hamstrung her; and then they became regretful. 157 The punishment therefore seized them; indeed in this is a sign; and most of them were not believers. 158 Yet verily your Lord is mighty and merciful. 159
