Thamood, belied their Messengers. 141 When their fellowman Saleh said to them, “Do you not fear?” 142 I have been sent as a trusted messenger to you. 143 "So fear Allah, and obey me. 144 For this I ask of you no wage; my wage falls only upon the Lord of the Worlds. 145 Do you think that you will be left secure [forever] -- 146 “In gardens and water springs?” 147 and cornfields, and palm-trees laden with fruit -- 148 And you hew houses out of the mountains exultingly; 149 So fear you God, and obey you me; 150 Do not obey the orders of the transgressors 151 and spread mischief in the land rather than set things right." 152 They said: Thou art but one of the bewitched; 153 You are naught but a mortal like ourselves; so bring a sign if you are one of the truthful. 154 He said, "This is a she-camel. She will have her share of water as you have your share, each on a certain day. 155 and do not touch her with malice so that there seize you the chastisement of a dreadful day.' 156 So they hamstrung her, and in the morning could only regret. 157 The punishment therefore seized them; indeed in this is a sign; and most of them were not believers. 158 Your Lord, He is the Almighty, the Most Merciful. 159
