The Town (Al-Balad)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
۞ I do not (need to) swear by this town (Mecca) 1 in which you are now living 2 And the begetter and that which he begat, 3 We verily have created man in an atmosphere: 4 Thinketh he that none hath power over him? 5 He says, "I have spent enormous wealth." 6 Does man think that no one saw him? 7 Have We not appointed to him two eyes, 8 And a tongue and two lips? 9 And shown him the two highways? 10 But he hath not attempted the Ascent - 11 And what can make you know what is [breaking through] the difficult pass? 12 (It is) Freeing a neck (slave, etc.) 13 And to feed in the day of hunger. 14 To an orphan, having relationship, 15 Or some poor wretch in misery, 16 And moreover to be of those who accepted faith, and who urged patience to one another and who urged graciousness to one another. 17 Those are the Companions of the Right. 18 As for those who rejected Our Signs, they are the People of the Left Hand. 19 and the Fire will close in on them. 20
