[AND the tribe of] Thamud gave the lie to [one of God's] message-hearers 141 when their brother Salih said to them, 'Will you not be godfearing? 142 Behold, I am an apostle [sent by Him] to you, [and therefore] worthy of your trust: 143 Have fear of God and obey me. 144 "And no reward whatever do I ask of you for it: my reward rests with none but the Sustainer of all the worlds. 145 "Will you be left secure in that which you have here? 146 "In gardens and springs. 147 sown fields, and palms with slender spathes? 148 And you hew houses out of the mountains exultingly; 149 Have fear of God and obey me. 150 and obey not the commandment of the prodigal 151 Who corrupt the land and do not reform it." 152 They said, "You are only bewitched and insane. 153 You are naught but a mortal like ourselves; so bring a sign if you are one of the truthful. 154 He said, "This is a she-camel. For her is a [time of] drink, and for you is a [time of] drink, [each] on a known day. 155 Do not molest her lest the chastisement of an Awesome Day should seize you." 156 Yet they hamstrung her, and in the morning they were remorseful, 157 and the chastisement seized them. Surely in that is a sign, yet most of them are not believers. 158 Your Lord is Majestic and All-merciful. 159
