He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
۞ He frowned and turned away 1 that the blind man came to him. 2 But what could tell thee but that perchance he might grow (in spiritual understanding)?- 3 Or be admonished, so that the admonition might have profited him? 4 As for he who is sufficed 5 To him you attend; 6 Yet it is not thy concern if he grow not (in grace). 7 As for the one who comes to you earnestly (striving for guidance). 8 and fearfully, 9 him didst thou disregard! 10 No! Indeed, these verses are a reminder; 11 So whoever wills, let him pay attention to it. 12 It is set down on honoured pages, 13 exalted, purified, 14 In the hands of scribes 15 Who are noble, virtuous. 16 Accursed be man! How stubbornly he denies the Truth. 17 [Does man ever consider] out of what substance [God] creates him? 18 Of a sperm-drop He created him, and determined him, 19 Then the way He made easy. 20 and in the end He causes him to die and brings him to the grave; 21 Then when He pleases, He will raise him to life again. 22 Not one – he has not yet completed what he was commanded. 23 Let man look at his food: 24 That We pour down the water, pouring (it) down in abundance, 25 Then We broke open the earth, splitting [it with sprouts], 26 how We made the grain to grow, 27 grapes, and fresh fodder, 28 and olive trees and date-palms, 29 And thick gardens, 30 and fruits and pastures – 31 for you and for your herds to delight in. 32 At length, when there comes the Deafening Noise,- 33 on a Day when everyone will [want to] flee from his brother, 34 and his mother and his father; 35 his consort, his sons, 36 on that Day, to every one of them will his own state be of sufficient concern. 37 Some faces that Day will be beaming, 38 laughing and joyful, 39 And other faces, on that day, with dust upon them, 40 Covered with the blackness (of shame): 41 Those are the disbelievers, the wicked. 42
