The tribe of Thamud rejected the Messengers. 141 Behold, their brother Salih said to them: "Will you not fear (Allah)? 142 "I am a trustworthy Messenger to you. 143 So fear Allah, and obey me. 144 For this I demand no recompense from you; my reward is only with the Lord of the Universe. 145 Do you believe that you will be left here to live securely in the present state 146 "Gardens and Springs, 147 And cornfields and palm-trees having fine spadices? 148 "And you carve houses out of mountains with great skill. 149 So be mindful of God and listen to me. 150 "And follow not the bidding of those who are extravagant,- 151 who spread evil in the land with no reform." 152 They said: Thou art but one of the bewitched; 153 You are but a human like ourselves. Produce for us a sign, if you are of the truthful' 154 Replied he: "This she-camel shall have a share of water, and you shall have a share of water, on the days appointed [therefor]; 155 Do not touch her with malice so that punishment of a dreadful day seizes you' 156 But they hamstrung her and so became regretful. 157 For they were seized by the torment. Verily there was a sign in this, but most of them did not believe. 158 And lo! thy Lord! He is indeed the Mighty, the Merciful. 159
