The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
By the night when it covers the day, 1 by the day when it appears radiant, 2 And Him Who hath created male and female, 3 Lo! your effort is dispersed (toward divers ends). 4 Thus, as for him who gives [to others] and is conscious of God, 5 and believes in the truth of the ultimate good 6 We will ease him toward ease. 7 And as for him who stinteth and is heedless, 8 And disbelieveth in goodness; 9 for him shall We make easy the path towards hardship: 10 his wealth shall not avail him when he perishes. 11 Surely, in Our hands is guidance, 12 and to Us belong the Next Life and the present. 13 So, I warn you of the blazing Fire. 14 None shall enter it but the most unhappy, 15 Who gives the lie (to the truth) and turns (his) back. 16 And Al-Muttaqun (the pious and righteous - see V. 2:2) will be far removed from it (Hell). 17 Who gives his wealth in order to be pure. 18 And no one has with him any boon for which he should be rewarded, 19 Except only the desire to seek the Countenance of his Lord, the Most High; 20 And presently he shall become well pleased. 21
