The Mountain (Al-Toor)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
I CALL TO witness the Mount Sinai, 1 and a Book inscribed 2 On a parchment scroll unrolled, 3 And by the Bait-ul-Ma'mur (the house over the heavens parable to the Ka'bah at Makkah, continuously visited by the angels); 4 And the roof exalted, 5 And by the Ocean filled with Swell;- 6 surely thy Lord's chastisement is about to fall; 7 There is none that can ward it off. 8 On the Day whereon the heaven will shake with an awful shaking. 9 And the mountains will move away with an awful movement. 10 Woe on that Day to those who deny the truth, 11 all those who [throughout their lives] but idly played with things vain 12 the day when they shall be pitched into the fire of Gehenna: 13 "This is the fire which you were wont to call a lie! 14 Is it magic or do you not still see? 15 Endure it [now]! But [whether you] bear yourselves with patience or without patience, it will be the same to you: you are but being requited for what you were wont to do." 16 Lo! those who kept their duty dwell in gardens and delight, 17 Delighted at the bestowal of their Lord; and their Lord has saved them from the fire. 18 (To them will be said:) "Eat and drink ye, with profit and health, because of your (good) deeds." 19 Reclining on ranged couches. And we wed them unto fair ones with wide, lovely eyes. 20 And those who believe and whose progeny follow them in belief. We shall cause their progeny to join them, and We shall not diminish unto them aught of their own work. Every man is for that which he hath earned a pledge. 21 And We will provide them with fruit and meat from whatever they desire. 22 There they pass from hand to hand a cup wherein is neither vanity nor cause of sin. 23 ۞ There will circulate among them [servant] boys [especially] for them, as if they were pearls well-protected. 24 And they will approach one another, inquiring of each other. 25 They will say: verily we were aforetime, midst our household, ever in dread. 26 But Allah hath been gracious unto us and hath preserved us from the torment of the breath of Fire. 27 Verily, we did invoke Him [alone] ere this: [and now He has shown us] that He alone is truly benign, a true dispenser of grace!" 28
