The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
By the star when it setteth. 1 This fellow-man of yours has not gone astray, nor is he deluded, 2 Nor doth he speak of (his own) desire. 3 It is not but a revelation revealed, 4 Bestowed on him by the Supreme Intellect, 5 [an angel] endowed with surpassing power, who in time manifested himself in his true shape and nature, 6 while he was in the highest horizon; 7 then drew near and suspended hung, 8 Till he was (distant) two bows' length or even nearer, 9 And he revealed to His Servant what he revealed. 10 His heart did not lie of what he saw. 11 Will you dispute with him what he saw? 12 And assuredly he saw him at another descent. 13 Near the lote-tree of the last boundary. 14 Near it is the Garden of Abode. 15 When the Lote-tree was covered over with what it was covered over; 16 Neither did sight falter nor exceed the bounds. 17 Indeed he saw the supreme signs of his Lord. 18 (Can anything as such be considered true) of al-Lat, al-Uzza, 19 And Manat, the third, the other? 20 Is the male for you and for Him the female? 21 that, lo and behold, is an unfair division! 22 These are nothing but names that you and your forefathers have invented, for which Allah has sent down no authority. They are merely following their conjectures and their carnal desires although guidance has come to them from their Lord. 23 Or shall man have what he coveteth? 24 despite the fact that [both] the life to come and this present [one] belong to God [alone]? 25
