And they ask thee of Zul Qarnain. Say thou: I shall recite unto you of him some mention. 83 Surely We established him in the land and granted him means of access to every thing. 84 So he followed a course. 85 until when he reached the very limits where the sun sets, he saw it setting in dark turbid waters; and nearby he met a people. We said: "O Dhu al-Qarnayn, you have the power to punish or to treat them with kindness." 86 He said: "Whoever doth wrong, him shall we punish; then shall he be sent back to his Lord; and He will punish him with a punishment unheard-of (before). 87 But as for him who believes, and does righteousness, he shall receive as recompense the reward most fair, and we shall speak to him, of our command, easiness.' 88 And once again he chose the right means [to achieve a right end]. 89 Until, when he came to the rising place of the sun, he found it rising on a people for whom We (Allah) had provided no shelter against the sun. 90 So it is; and Our knowledge encompasses all that he possessed. 91 Then he followed (another) way, 92 when he reached between the two barriers he found on one side of them a nation who could barely understand speech. 93 They said: "O Dhu al-Qarnayn, Gog and Magog are spreading corruption in this land. So shall we pay you taxes on the understanding that you will set up a barrier between us and them?" 94 He said, "What My Lord has given me is better [than any tribute]. Help me with a force of labourers and I will erect a barrier between you and them: 95 Bring me lumps of iron. Then when he had evened up between the two mountain-sides, he said: blow! Then when he had made it fire, he said: bring me and I shall pour thereon molten copper. 96 Thus (Gog and Magog) could neither climb over it nor dig a hole through (the rampart). 97 and he said, "This is a mercy from my Lord. But when the promise of my Lord comes to pass, He will level it to dust. My Lord's promise is ever true!" 98 ۞ And We shall leave them on that day surging one against other and the trumpet shall be blown, and then We shall assemble them together. 99 And on that Day We shall place hell, for all to see, before those who denied the truth 100 Those whose eyes had been within a cover [removed] from My remembrance, and they were not able to hear. 101
