These (people of the right hand) consist of many from the ancient 39 and a good many of later times. 40 As for the people on the left hand, how miserable they will be! 41 Amidst scorching wind and scalding water. 42 And in the shades of Black Smoke: 43 Neither cool nor agreeable. 44 Surely they had lived before in luxury, 45 and they persisted obstinately in awful sin, 46 They used to say: “What! Once we are dead and are reduced to dust and bones, shall we still be raised to a new life from the dead? 47 What, and our fathers, the ancients' 48 Say, "Indeed, the earlier ones and the later ones 49 shall be gathered to the appointed time of a known day. 50 Then indeed you, the astray, the deniers 51 will eat from the fruit of the tree of Zaqqum, 52 and will have to fill your bellies therewith, 53 and thereupon you shall drink boiling water, 54 "Indeed ye shall drink like diseased camels raging with thirst!" 55 Such will be their welcome on the Day of Judgement. 56 We have created you, why do you not then assent? 57 Have you considered the seed you spill? 58 Is it you who create it (i.e. make this semen into a perfect human being), or are We the Creator? 59 We have destined death for you and no one can challenge Us 60 In order that We may bring in your place the likes of you and make you grow into what you know not. 61 And certainly you know the first growth, why do you not then mind? 62 Behold! that which ye sow. 63 Do you make it grow or is it We who make it grow? 64 We could turn it, if We pleased, into straw; then you would rue the day, 65 "Verily, we are ruined! 66 Nay, but we have been deprived [of our livelihood]!" 67 Consider the water that you drink. 68 Is it you who brought it down from the clouds or is it We Who brought it down? 69 Did We will, We would make it bitter; so why are you not thankful? 70 Consider the fire that you strike (and get by friction). 71 Is it ye who grow the tree which feeds the fire, or do We grow it? 72 We Ourselves made it for a reminder, and a boon to the desert-dwellers. 73 So exalt the name of your Lord, the Most Great. 74
