The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
By the star when it sets: 1 your companion has neither strayed nor is he deluded; 2 Nor doth he speak of (his own) desire. 3 It is naught but revelation that is revealed, 4 and taught to him 5 The Strong; then the Spectacle inclined towards him. 6 And reached the highest pinnacle. 7 Then he drew near and hung above suspended, 8 he was but two bows' length or even nearer, 9 When He revealed to His votary what He revealed. 10 The [servant's] heart did not give the lie to what he saw: 11 What, will you dispute with him about what he sees! 12 For indeed he saw him at a second descent, 13 Near the lote-tree of the last boundary. 14 near unto the garden of promise. 15 when there covered the Lote-Tree that which covered; 16 The eye turned not aside nor yet was overbold. 17 Indeed he saw the supreme signs of his Lord. 18 (Among the idols) have you considered allat and al'uzza, 19 as well as [in] Manat, the third and last [of this triad]? 20 Are yours the males and His the females? 21 This is an unfair distinction! 22 These [allegedly divine beings] are nothing but empty names which you have invented - you and your forefathers - [and] for which God has bestowed no warrant from on high. They [who worship them] follow nothing but surmise and their own wishful thinking - although right guidance has now indeed come unto them from their Sustainer. 23 Can ever man get what he desires? 24 despite the fact that [both] the life to come and this present [one] belong to God [alone]? 25
