The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
Allah - beginning with the name of - the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
Someone has (needlessly) demanded to experience the torment (of God), 1 Upon the disbelievers, which none can repel, 2 from God, the Lord of the Stairways. 3 To Him ascend the angels and the Spirit in a day the measure of which is fifty thousand years. 4 Therefore endure with a goodly patience. 5 They think that it (the Day of Judgment) is far away. 6 but We see it is nigh. 7 On the Day the sky will be like murky oil, 8 The mountains like the tufts of (carded) wool, 9 And no friend will ask after a friend, 10 They will be seeing them; the guilty will wish if only he could redeem himself from the punishment of that day, by offering his sons. 11 And his wife and his brother. 12 And his kin that sheltered him. 13 and whosoever is in the earth, altogether, so that it might save him. 14 But nay! for lo! it is the fire of hell 15 That would skin the scalp. 16 It shall call him who turneth back and backslideth. 17 and amassed (riches) and hoarded. 18 ۞ Verily man is impatient by nature: 19 Fretful when evil touches him; 20 If good comes to him he holds back his hand, 21 Except those who establish prayer. 22 Those who remain constant in their Salat (prayers); 23 And those in whose wealth is a recognised right. 24 For the needy and those dispossessed, 25 and those who believe in the Day of Judgement 26 who are afraid of the torment of their Lord, 27 For their Lord's displeasure is the opposite of Peace and Tranquillity;- 28 And those who of their private parts are guards. 29 Save with their wives and those whom their right hands possess, for thus they are not blameworthy; 30 whereas such as seek to go beyond that [limit] are truly transgressors; 31 and who preserve their trusts and their covenant, 32 and those who stand by their testimony 33 and who are constant in their prayers. 34 It is these who will be honoured in Gardens. 35
