The Town (Al-Balad)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
۞ Nay, I swear by this city - 1 and you are dwelling in this city -- 2 And the begetter and whom he begot. 3 that We have created man into a life of toil and trial. 4 Does he think that no one can overpower him? 5 He may say (boastfully); Wealth have I squandered in abundance! 6 Does he think that no one sees him? 7 Have We not appointed to him two eyes, 8 And a tongue, and a pair of lips?- 9 And did We not guide him to the two elevated things? 10 But he could not scale the steep ascent. 11 and what shall teach thee what is the steep? 12 (It is) the freeing of a slave, 13 Or the giving of food in a day of privation 14 The orphan near in relationship, 15 or of a needy [stranger] lying in the dust 16 And then being among those who believed and advised one another to patience and advised one another to compassion. 17 These are the people of the right. 18 But those who disbelieve Our revelations, their place will be on the left hand. 19 Over them shall be Fire closing round. 20
