The Romans (Al-Room)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
۞ Alif, Lam, Meem. 1 The Romans have been defeated in a nearby land and after this defeat, 2 in a nearby land. They will reverse their defeat with a victory 3 Within a few years. Allah's is the command before and after; and on that day the believers shall rejoice, 4 In the help of God. He helps whom He will; He is all-mighty, ever-merciful. 5 (It is) the promise of Allah. Never does Allah depart from His promise: but most men understand not. 6 They know only the outside appearance of the life of the world (i.e. the matters of their livelihood, like irrigating or sowing or reaping, etc.), and they are heedless of the Hereafter. 7 Do they not ponder about their own selves? God has created the heavens and the earth and all that is between them for a purpose and for an appointed time? Yet many deny they will ever meet with their Lord. 8 Do they not travel in the land, and see what was the end of those before them? They were superior to them in strength, and they tilled the earth and populated it in greater numbers than these (pagans) have done, and there came to them their Messengers with clear proofs. Surely, Allah wronged them not, but they used to wrong themselves. 9 Evil was the end of those evil-doers, for they gave the lie to Allah's Signs and scoffed at them. 10
