A company of the former peoples 39 And a company of the later peoples. 40 The Companions of the Left Hand,- what will be the Companions of the Left Hand? 41 They will be in the midst of scorching wind and boiling water, 42 and the shadow of a smoking blaze 43 Neither cool nor refreshing. 44 For, behold, in times gone by they were wont to abandon themselves wholly to the pursuit of pleasures, 45 And they have been persisting in the heinous offence. 46 And they used to say: "When we die and become dust and bones, shall we then indeed be resurrected? 47 We and our fathers of old? 48 (Muhammad), say, "All the ancient and later generations 49 "All will certainly be gathered together for the meeting appointed for a Day well-known. 50 Then you, the erring ones and those that gave the lie to the Truth, 51 "You verily will eat of the trees of Zaqqum. 52 and will have to fill your bellies therewith, 53 "And drink boiling water on top of it, 54 Drinking even as the camel drinketh. 55 Such will be their welcome on the Day of Judgement. 56 We have created you: why then do you not accept the truth? 57 So what is your opinion regarding the semen you discharge? 58 Is it you who creates it, or are We the Creator? 59 It is We who have ordained death for all of you; and We cannot be prevented 60 in replacing you with another creation like you, changing you into a form which you do not know. 61 And assuredly ye have fully known the first production wherefore heed ye not? 62 Have you considered the seeds you till? 63 Is it you that cause it to grow, or are We the causers of growth? 64 Had We wanted, We could have crushed it to bits and you would have been left to lament, 65 That, “We have indeed been penalised!” 66 Rather, we have been deprived." 67 And have you seen the water that you drink? 68 Is it you who cause it from the rainclouds to come down, or are We the Causer of it to come down? 69 If We had so pleased, We could have made it bitter. So why would you not give thanks? 70 Consider the fire that you strike (and get by friction). 71 Is it you that originated its tree, or are We the Originator? 72 We have made it a Reminder (for the Hell-fire, in the Hereafter); and an article of use for the travellers (and all the others, in this world). 73 So glorify the name of your Lord, the Supreme. 74
