The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
A beseecher besought the visitation of chastisement, 1 Upon the disbelievers the punishment that none can avert. 2 (A Penalty) from Allah, Lord of the Ways of Ascent. 3 The angels and Jibreel, ascend towards Him the punishment will befall on a day which spans fifty thousand years. 4 So, (O Prophet), persevere with gracious perseverance. 5 They think that it (the Day of Judgment) is far away. 6 while We think that it is near at hand. 7 The Day that the sky will be like molten brass, 8 And the hills will be light as wool. 9 And not a friend shall ask a friend, 10 although they shall be within sight of one another. The guilty one would fain ransom himself from the torment of that Day by offering his children, 11 his companion (wife), his brother, 12 His kindred who sheltered him, 13 And all that are in the earth, so that it might save him. 14 Never! That is indeed a blazing fire. 15 tearing away his skin! 16 and drag into it anyone who has turned away (from obeying God), 17 and amassed wealth and covetously hoarded it. 18 ۞ Truly man was created very impatient;- 19 When evil comes upon him he is impatient; 20 If good comes to him he holds back his hand, 21 except those who are steadfast 22 Those who are constant in their prayer 23 those in whose wealth is a right known 24 for those that ask and those that are dispossessed, 25 And those who accept the truth of the judgment day 26 and fear the chastisement of their Lord 27 Indeed, the punishment of their Lord is not that from which one is safe - 28 who guard their privates 29 Save with their wives and those whom their right hands possess, for thus they are not blameworthy; 30 but whoever goes beyond this is a transgressor; 31 And those who are to their trusts and promises attentive 32 And those who stand firm in their testimonies; 33 and who observe their prayers. 34 They will be in gardens, honored. 35
