The Town (Al-Balad)
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
۞ Nay! I swear by this city 1 And you shall be made free from obligation in this city-- 2 And the parent and the offspring, 3 We verily have created man in an atmosphere: 4 Thinks he that none can overcome him? 5 He saith: I have wasted riches plenteous. 6 Thinks he that none sees him? 7 Have We not made for him two eyes? 8 And a tongue and two lips, 9 And did We not guide him to the two elevated things? 10 But he hath not attempted the Ascent - 11 And what will make you know the path that is steep? 12 The freeing of a slave, 13 or the feeding, upon a day of [one's own] hunger, 14 to an orphan near of kin; 15 and downtrodden destitute person, (so that he would be of) 16 Then will he be of those who believe, and enjoin patience, (constancy, and self-restraint), and enjoin deeds of kindness and compassion. 17 These are the people of the right hand. 18 and [as for] those who are bent on denying the truth of Our revelations, they are the people of the left hand, 19 The Fire will be shut over them (i.e. they will be enveloped by the Fire without any opening or window or outlet. 20
