Jonah was certainly a Messenger. 139 [Mention] when he ran away to the laden ship. 140 And he drew lots and was among the losers. 141 Then a fish swallowed him, and he was blameworthy. 142 Had he not glorified God, 143 He would have stayed in its belly till the day the dead are raised. 144 ۞ But We cast him, upon the shore, and he was ill, 145 and caused a creeping plant to grow over him [out of the barren soil]. 146 We sent him to a hundred thousand or more people. 147 and they believed in him: so We let them live in ease for a while. 148 Now ask them if their Lord has daughters, and they sons? 149 Did We create the angels as females the while they witnessed?” 150 Lo! verily it is of their falsehood that they say: 151 God hath begotten. Verily they are the liars. 152 Does He prefer sons to daughters? 153 What is amiss with you and your judgment? 154 Will ye not then be admonished? 155 Or, is there for you a clear warranty 156 Then bring your scripture, if what you say is true. 157 They have established a kinship between Allah and the angels; and the angels know well that these people will be arraigned (as culprits). 158 (They say): “Exalted be Allah above what they attribute to Him, 159 Save single-minded slaves of Allah. 160 So surely you and what you worship, 161 you shall not tempt any against Him 162 Save him who will go to hell. 163 There is not one of us (angels) but has his known place (or position); 164 we are the rangers, 165 and we are of those who glorify Allah.” 166 They used to say before: 167 "If only we had a tradition [to this effect] from our forebears, 168 We would be single-minded slaves of Allah. 169 But when it came to them, they rejected it. They shall soon come to know (the end of such an attitude). 170 And Our word has already preceded for Our servants, the messengers, 171 That they would be helped, 172 and that Our army will be triumphant. 173 Therefore turn away from them till a time, 174 And watch them and they shall see (the punishment)! 175 Do they really wish to hasten Our punishment? 176 When it lights in their courtyard, how evil will be the morning of them that are warned! 177 Leave them alone for a while, 178 And see, for they are going to see. 179 Exalted is your Lord, the Lord of might, above what they describe. 180 And peace be unto those sent (to warn). 181 And praise belongs to Allah, Lord of the Worlds. 182
