a large throng from the ancients, 39 And a company of the later peoples. 40 As for the Companions of the Left 41 In scorching wind and boiling hot water. 42 scalding water and under a shadow of black smoke, 43 Neither cool nor beneficial. 44 Verily they have been heretofore affluent. 45 and persisted in the great sin 46 And they used to say: When we are dead and have become dust and bones, shall we then, forsooth, be raised again, 47 "And also our forefathers?" 48 Say: 'Those of ancient times and those of later times 49 shall all be brought together on an appointed Day. 50 Then you, you misguided ones, who deny the truth, 51 shall all eat from the Tree of al-Zaqqum, 52 filling your bellies with it; 53 Then drink over it of boiling water; 54 And will drink as the drinking of thirsty camels. 55 Such will be their welcome on Judgment Day! 56 It is We Who have created you: why will ye not witness the Truth? 57 Did you ever consider the sperm that you emit? 58 Is it you who creates it, or are We the Creator? 59 It was We who decreed death among you. We will not be surpassed 60 In the matter of exchanging you for others, and to transform you into what you do not know. 61 And [since] you are indeed aware of the [miracle of your] coming into being in the first instance - why, then, do you not bethink yourselves [of Us]? 62 Just ponder over what you sow: 63 is it you that sow it, or are We the Sower? 64 Were it Our Will, We could crumble it to dry powder, and ye would be left in wonderment, 65 Surely we are burdened with debt: 66 "Indeed are we shut out (of the fruits of our labour)" 67 Did you cast a good look at the water that you drink? 68 Is it you who cause it from the rainclouds to come down, or are We the Causer of it to come down? 69 If We had so pleased, We could have made it bitter. So why would you not give thanks? 70 Did you consider the fire which you kindle? 71 Is it you who have brought into being the tree that serves as its fuel - or are We the cause of its coming into being? 72 We made it a reminder and a provision for the needy. 73 Then glorify with praises the Name of your Lord, the Most Great. 74
