A crowd of earlier generations 39 And a crowd of the later. 40 As for the People on the Left: how miserable will be the People on the Left! 41 Amidst scorching wind and scalding water. 42 and a shade of thick, pitch-black smoke, 43 which will neither be cool nor soothing. 44 and before that they lived at ease, 45 and persisted in heinous sins. 46 And they used to say, "When we are dead and have turned into dust and bones, will we surely be raised again?" 47 and perhaps, too, our forebears of old?" 48 Say, [O Muhammad], "Indeed, the former and the later peoples 49 shall all be brought together on an appointed Day. 50 Then verily ye, O ye erring, denying people. 51 You will indeed eat from the Zaqqum tree. 52 and you shall fill therewith your bellies 53 and drink boiling water on top of that, 54 lapping it down like thirsty camels.' 55 This shall be their hospitality on the Day of Doom. 56 It is We Who have created you: why will ye not witness the Truth? 57 Have you considered the seed you spill? 58 did you create it or did We? 59 It was We who decreed death among you. We will not be surpassed 60 in replacing you with another creation like you, changing you into a form which you do not know. 61 And ye certainly know already the first form of creation: why then do ye not celebrate His praises? 62 Just ponder over what you sow: 63 Cause it ye to grow, or are We the Grower? 64 Had We wanted, We could have crushed it to bits and you would have been left to lament, 65 (Saying), "We are indeed left with debts (for nothing): 66 Indeed, we have been deprived of the fruits of our labour." 67 Did you cast a good look at the water that you drink? 68 Is it you who cause it to descend from the clouds, or do We? 69 We could make it brackish, if We pleased; so why do you not acknowledge thanks? 70 Have you considered the fire you kindle? 71 Did you make its tree grow or was it We Who made it grow? 72 We! it is We Who made it a reminder and a provision unto the campers. 73 Then magnify the Name of thy Lord, the All-mighty. 74
