The Night (Al-Layl)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
I CALL THE night to witness when it covers over, 1 and by the day as it appears radiantly, 2 And by oath of the One Who created the male and the female. 3 you strive in various ways. 4 Thus, as for him who gives [to others] and is conscious of God, 5 And believes in Al-Husna. 6 We shall facilitate for him the Way to Bliss. 7 But as for him who is niggardly, and thinks that he is self-sufficient, 8 And gives the lie to the best,- 9 We will ease him toward difficulty. 10 And his substance will avail him not when he perisheth. 11 Surely it is for Us to show the Right Way, 12 And indeed, to Us belongs the Hereafter and the first [life]. 13 I have now warned you of a Blazing Fire, 14 None shall roast therein but the most wretched, 15 who denied [the truth], and turned away. 16 The pious ones will be safe from this fire 17 He who gives his wealth to be purified, 18 And is under no one's obligation to return his favour, 19 Except the seeking of the pleasure of his Lord, the Most High. 20 and he shall surely be satisfied. 21
