We did send Moses aforetime, with Our Signs, to Pharaoh and his Chiefs: He said, "I am a messenger of the Lord of the Worlds." 46 But as soon as he came before them with Our [miraculous] signs, lo! they derided them, 47 yet there was not a sign that We showed them that was not greater than its sister, and We seized them with the punishment so that they might return. 48 And they said: O magician! call on your Lord for our sake, as He has made the covenant with you; we shall surely be the followers of the right way. 49 Yet no sooner did We take away the affliction from them than they broke their pledge. 50 And Fir'aun (Pharaoh) proclaimed among his people, saying: "O my people! Is not mine the dominion of Egypt, and these rivers flowing underneath me. See you not then? 51 "Am I not better than this one [Musa (Moses)], who is Mahin [has no honour nor any respect, and is weak and despicable] and can scarcely express himself clearly? 52 Why have no armlets of gold been given him, or angels sent down successively with him' 53 So he bluffed his people, and they obeyed him. Indeed, they were [themselves] a people defiantly disobedient [of Allah]. 54 So when they incurred Our wrath, We exacted retribution from them, and drowned them all, 55 And We made them a precedent and an ensample unto those after. 56
