۞ We had earlier given Abraham true direction, for We knew him well. 51 When he said to his father and his people, “What are these idols before whom you squat (worshipping)?” 52 They replied, "We found our fathers worshipping them". 53 He said, "Both you and your fathers have certainly been in error." 54 They said, "Have you come to us with truth, or are you of those who jest?" 55 He said, 'Nay, but your Lord is the Lord of the heavens and the earth who originated them, and I am one of those that bear witness thereunto. 56 Abraham said to himself, "By God! I will devise a plan against their idols when they are away." 57 So he made them into fragments, except a large one among them, that they might return to it [and question]. 58 (When they saw the idols in this state) they said: "Who has done this to our gods? Surely he is one of the wrong-doers." 59 Said some [of them]: "We heard a youth speak of these [gods with scorn]: he is called Abraham." 60 Their chiefs said, "Bring him before the eyes of the people and let them testify that he has spoken against the idols." 61 [And when he came.] they asked: "Hast thou done this to our gods, O Abraham?" 62 'No' he replied. 'It was their great one amongst them that did it. Ask them, if they are able to speak' 63 And so they turned upon one another, saying, "Behold, it is you who are doing wrong." 64 With their heads cast down they said, "Abraham, you know that idols do not speak. How then can you ask such a question?" 65 (Abraham) said, "Do ye then worship, besides Allah, things that can neither be of any good to you nor do you harm? 66 Fie on you and all that ye worship instead of Allah! Have ye then no sense? 67 They said: "Burn him, and come to the support of your gods, if you are going to do anything." 68 We said to the fire, "Be cool and peaceful (with Abraham)". 69 They wished to entrap him, but We made them greater losers. 70 But We delivered him and (his nephew) Lut (and directed them) to the land which We have blessed for the nations. 71 And We bestowed on him Isaac and, as an additional gift, (a grandson), Jacob, and We made righteous men of every one (of them). 72 and made them leaders who would guide [others] in accordance with Our behest: for We inspired them [with a will] to do good works, and to be constant in prayer, and to dispense charity: and Us [alone] did they worship. 73 And (remember) Lout (Lot), We gave him Hukman (right judgement of the affairs and Prophethood) and (religious) knowledge, and We saved him from the town (folk) who practised Al-Khaba'ith (evil, wicked and filthy deeds, etc.). Verily, they were a people given to evil, and were Fasiqun (rebellious, disobedient, to Allah). 74 and We admitted him into Our mercy; he was of the righteous. 75
