(Muhammad), they will ask you about Dhu 'l-Qarnayn. Say, "I shall tell you something about him". 83 Verily We! We established him in the earth, and vouchsafed unto him of everything a way. 84 He journeyed on a way 85 Until, when he reached the setting of the sun, he found it [as if] setting in a spring of dark mud, and he found near it a people. Allah said, "O Dhul-Qarnayn, either you punish [them] or else adopt among them [a way of] goodness." 86 He submitted, “Regarding one who has done injustice, we shall soon punish him – he will then be brought back to his Lord, Who will punish him severely.” 87 As for those who believe and do good, they will receive virtuous rewards and We will tell them to do only what they can. 88 Then he followed another way, 89 Until, when he came to the rising of the sun, he found it rising on a people for whom We had provided no covering protection against the sun. 90 Even so! and We had a full knowledge of what he had. 91 Thereafter he followed a way. 92 after this to the middle of two mountains where he found a people who could hardly understand a single word. 93 They said, "O Dhu'l-Qarnayn! Gog and Magog are causing corruption in the land, so may we pay you tribute on condition that you set a barrier between us and them?" 94 He said: "(The power) in which my Lord has established me is better (than tribute): Help me therefore with strength (and labour): I will erect a strong barrier between you and them: 95 Bring me ingots of iron." Then after he had filled up the space between the two mountain-sides, he said: "(Light a fire) and ply bellows." When he had made it (red like) fire, he said: "Bring me molten copper which I may pour on it." 96 So they [Ya'juj and Ma'juj (Gog and Magog)] were made powerless to scale it or dig through it. 97 [Dhul-Qarnayn] said, "This is a mercy from my Lord; but when the promise of my Lord comes, He will make it level, and ever is the promise of my Lord true." 98 ۞ And on that Day We shall let some of them surge like waves against others, and the Trumpet shall be blown. Then We shall gather them all together. 99 and upon that day We shall present Gehenna to the unbelievers 100 whose eyes had been veiled against Our Quran and who were not able to hear (its recitation). 101
