a multitude of the ancients, 39 And a large group from the latter. 40 And those on the left – how (wretched) are those on the left! 41 In fierce hot wind and boiling water, 42 And in the shades of Black Smoke: 43 Neither cool nor honorable. 44 Before they lived at ease, 45 and they persisted obstinately in awful sin, 46 And said: "What! When we are dead and turned to dust and bones, shall we then be raised again? 47 Will our ancient forefathers be resurrected too? 48 Say: The first and the last, 49 shall be gathered to the appointed time of a known day. 50 Then verily ye, O ye erring, denying people. 51 Most surely eat of a tree of Zaqqoom, 52 and fill your bellies with it, 53 and thereupon you shall drink boiling water, 54 drinking it as thirsty camels do.” 55 Such shall be your hospitality on the Day of Recompense. 56 We created you; therefore why will you not believe? 57 Have you seen sperm? 58 Is it you who create it (i.e. make this semen into a perfect human being), or are We the Creator? 59 It is We who have ordained death for all of you; and We cannot be prevented 60 From replacing you with others or raising you in a way you do not know. 61 And certainly you know the first growth, why do you not then mind? 62 And have you seen that [seed] which you sow? 63 Do you give it its increase, or are We the giver? 64 If We so pleased, We could turn your harvest into chaff. Then you would start lamenting, 65 "We are ruined, 66 Nay, but we are deprived! 67 See ye the water which ye drink? 68 Is it you who brought it down from the clouds, or is it We who bring it down? 69 Had We wanted, We could have made it salty. Why then do you not give thanks? 70 Have you thought about the fire you kindle? 71 Is it ye who grow the tree which feeds the fire, or do We grow it? 72 We Ourselves made it for a reminder, and a boon to the desert-dwellers. 73 Then celebrate with praises the name of thy Lord, the Supreme! 74
