And they ask you about Zulqarnain. Say: I will recite to you an account of him. 83 Say: "I will cite before you his commemoration." We gave him authority in the land and means of accomplishing every end. 84 He journeyed on a way 85 to the West where he found the sun setting into a warm source (spring) of water and a people living near by. We asked him, "Dhu 'l-Qarnayn, you may punish them or treat them with kindness?" 86 He said: "Whoever doth wrong, him shall we punish; then shall he be sent back to his Lord; and He will punish him with a punishment unheard-of (before). 87 "But as for him who believes (in Allah's Oneness) and works righteousness, he shall have the best reward, (Paradise), and we (Dhul-Qarnain) shall speak unto him mild words (as instructions)." 88 He again pursued a purpose. 89 Until, when he came to the rising place of the sun, he found it rising on a people for whom We (Allah) had provided no shelter against the sun. 90 So (it was). And We knew all concerning him. 91 And once again he chose the right means [to achieve a right end]. 92 Until when he arrived between the two mountains, he found beside them a people who well-nigh understood not a word. 93 They said, “O Zul-Qarnain – indeed Yajuj and Majuj* are spreading chaos in the land – so shall we assign for you a consideration upon the condition that you set up a wall between us and them?” (* Gog and Magog.) 94 He said, “That which my Lord has given me control over is better, therefore help me with strength – I shall set up a barrier between you and them.” 95 Bring me ingots of iron." Then after he had filled up the space between the two mountain-sides, he said: "(Light a fire) and ply bellows." When he had made it (red like) fire, he said: "Bring me molten copper which I may pour on it." 96 So Gog and Magog were unable to pass over it, nor were they able [to effect] in it any penetration. 97 He said, 'This is a mercy from my Lord. But when the promise of my Lord comes to pass, He will make it into powder; and my Lord's promise is ever true.' 98 ۞ AND ON that Day" We shall [call forth all mankind and] leave them to surge like waves [that dash] against one another; and the trumpet [of judgment] will be blown, and We shall gather them all together. 99 And on that Day We shall place hell, for all to see, before those who denied the truth 100 who have turned a blind eye to My reminder and a deaf ear to My warning. 101
