a large group of the earlier people 39 and a multitude of the later people. 40 As for the people on the left hand, how miserable they will be! 41 They will find themselves in scorching wind and scalding water, 42 And in the shades of Black Smoke: 43 Neither cool nor refreshing. 44 Before they lived at ease, 45 But persisted in that greater sin, 46 And they used to say, "When we die and become dust and bones, are we indeed to be resurrected? 47 And our forefathers [as well]?" 48 Say, [O Muhammad], "Indeed, the former and the later peoples 49 will be brought together for an appointment on an appointed day. 50 Then indeed you, O those astray [who are] deniers, 51 shall all eat from the Tree of al-Zaqqum, 52 filling your bellies, with it 53 And thereon ye will drink of boiling water, 54 "So you will drink (that) like thirsty camels!" 55 Such will be their entertainment on the Day of Requital! 56 It is We Who created you, so why do you not accept the truth? 57 So what is your opinion regarding the semen you discharge? 58 Do you yourselves create it, or are We the Creators? 59 We have decreed among you Death; We shall not be outstripped; 60 That We may transfigure you and make you what ye know not. 61 You certainly knew about (your) first development. Why do you not take heed? 62 Have you considered the seeds you till? 63 Do you make it grow or is it We who make it grow? 64 If We so pleased, We could turn your harvest into chaff. Then you would start lamenting, 65 [Saying], "Indeed, we are [now] in debt; 66 Aye! we are deprived! 67 Have you seen the water which you drink? 68 Did you send it down from the clouds, or did We send it? 69 Were it Our Will, We could make it salt (and unpalatable): then why do ye not give thanks? 70 See ye the Fire which ye kindle? 71 Is it you who made the tree thereof to grow, or are We the Grower? 72 We have made it as a reminder and convenience for the needy. 73 Wherefore hallow thou the name of thy Lord, the Mighty. 74
