A (goodly) number from those of old, 39 and also a large throng from those of later times. 40 And those on the left – how (wretched) are those on the left! 41 (they shall live) amid burning winds and boiling water, 42 And in the shades of Black Smoke: 43 (That shadow) neither cool, nor (even) good, 44 Indeed they were, before that, indulging in affluence, 45 and had persisted in the Great Sin. 46 and they used to say, "What! After we have died and become dust and bones, shall we indeed be raised up again? 47 "(We) and our fathers of old?" 48 Say thou: verily the ancients and those of later generations: 49 "All will surely be gathered together for appointed Meeting of a known Day. 50 Then indeed you, O those astray [who are] deniers, 51 Shall surely eat of the tree of Az-Zqqum. 52 Fill your bellies with it, 53 And drink over it scalding water, 54 And drink as drinks the thirsty camel. 55 This is their reception on the Day of Justice. 56 It is He who created you, then why do you not affirm the truth? 57 Just consider (the semen) that you emit, 58 Do ye create it or are We the Creator? 59 We have incorporated death in your constitution, and We shall not be hindered 60 To transfigure you and create you in (forms) that you know not. 61 You certainly knew about (your) first development. Why do you not take heed? 62 Ponder upon the soil you till, 63 Is it you who cultivate it, or is it We Who develop it? 64 If We willed, We could make it [dry] debris, and you would remain in wonder, 65 (Saying): "We are indeed Mughramun (i.e. ruined or lost the money without any profit, or punished by the loss of all that we spend for cultivation, etc.)! [See Tafsir Al-Qurtubi, Vol. 17, Page 219] 66 Nay, but we have been deprived [of our livelihood]!" 67 Consider the water that you drink. 68 Is it you who brought it down from the clouds, or is it We who bring it down? 69 We could make it brackish, if We pleased; so why do you not acknowledge thanks? 70 Tell Me! The fire which you kindle, 71 Is it you that produce the trees for it, or are We the producers? 72 We! it is We Who made it a reminder and a provision unto the campers. 73 Then celebrate with praises the name of thy Lord, the Supreme! 74
