The Mountain (Al-Toor)
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
I CALL TO witness the Mount Sinai, 1 and by the Book in lines 2 In parchment spread open 3 by the House inhabited 4 by the high ceiling (heaven), 5 Consider the surf-swollen sea! 6 the punishment of your Lord shall certainly come to pass, 7 there is no one who could avert it, 8 [It will come to pass] on the Day when the skies will be convulsed in [a great] convulsion, 9 And the mountains will move away with an awful movement. 10 Woe, then, on that Day to those who give the lie (to this Message) 11 Who are in [empty] discourse amusing themselves. 12 The day when they are thrust with a (disdainful) thrust, into the fire of hell 13 "This is the fire which you were wont to call a lie! 14 Is it magic, or you cannot see? 15 Taste you therein its heat, and whether you are patient of it or impatient of it, it is all the same. You are only being requited for what you used to do. 16 The pious will live in bountiful Paradise, 17 talking of what they have received from their Lord and of how their Lord has saved them from the torment of hell. 18 [And they will be told:] "Eat and drink with good cheer as an outcome of what you were wont to do, 19 They will recline (with ease) on thrones arranged in ranks. And We shall marry them to Houris (female, fair ones) with wide lovely eyes. 20 And those who believed, and their seed followed them in belief, We shall join their seed with them, and We shall not defraud them of aught of their work; every man shall be pledged for what he earned. 21 And We provide them with fruit and meat such as they desire. 22 They will exchange cups of wine free of (incitement to) pleasantry or sin. 23 ۞ Round about them will serve, (devoted) to them, young male servants (handsome) as Pearls well-guarded. 24 They will go to one another asking each other questions: 25 Saying, “Indeed before this, we were in our houses, worried.” 26 Then Allah graced us with His favour and saved us from the chastisement of the scorching wind. 27 Indeed, we used to supplicate Him before. Indeed, it is He who is the Beneficent, the Merciful." 28
