The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
O YOU ENFOLDED in your mantle (of reform), 1 Arise and warn, 2 And your Lord do magnify, 3 And thy garments keep free from stain! 4 and shun uncleanness, 5 Nor expect, in giving, any increase (for thyself)! 6 and for the sake of your Lord, be patient. 7 And when the trumpet is blown, 8 that Day will be a hard and distressing Day. 9 Not of ease, for disbelievers. 10 Leave Me with him whom I created alone, 11 And then granted him resources in abundance. 12 And sons always present by his side, 13 And made (life) smooth for him. 14 and yet, he greedily desires that I give him even more! 15 Never will he receive more. He has been hostile to Our revelations. 16 I shall inflict on him hardship, 17 For he thought and he plotted;- 18 death seize him, how he determined! 19 yea, he destroys himself, the way he meditates! 20 Then he considered [again]; 21 then he frowned and scowled, 22 Then turned his back and waxed proud, 23 Then he said: This is naught but enchantment, narrated (from others); 24 This is nothing but the word of a mortal!" 25 Him shall I soon roast in Hell. 26 What could make you conceive what hell-fire is? 27 It does not allow to live, and neither leaves [to die,] 28 Scorching the skin. 29 Over it are nineteen (angels as guardians and keepers of Hell). 30 We have appointed only angels to be wardens of the Fire. We have specified their number only as a trial for those who are bent on denying the truth, so that those who were given the Book might gain in certainty, and those who believe might increase in faith -- and so that neither those who have been given the Scripture nor the believers might have any doubts, and that those sick at heart and those who deny the truth might ask, "What does God mean by this parable?" In this way, God lets go astray whom He wills, and guides whom He wills. And none knows the forces of your Lord but He. This is but a Reminder for man. 31
