Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
By the dawn 1 And ten nights, 2 by the even, and the odd, 3 and by the passing night, 4 Is there (not) in these an adjuration (or evidence) for those who understand? 5 Hast thou not seen how thy Lord did with Ad, 6 Of Eram with lofty pillars (erected as signposts in the desert), 7 the like of which has never been created in the land, 8 and with [the tribe of] Thamud, who hollowed out rocks in the valley? 9 And with Pharaoh, firm of might, 10 (All) these transgressed beyond bounds in the lands, 11 and caused much corruption in them: 12 Thy Lord unloosed on them a scourge of chastisement; 13 Your Lord is certainly in wait. 14 So man, whenever his Lord tests him by giving him honour and favours – thereupon he says, “My Lord has honoured me.” 15 And when He proveth him, and so stinteth unto him his provision, he saith: 'my Lord hath despised me. 16 Nay, nay! but ye honour not the orphans! 17 and you urge not the feeding of the needy, 18 And devour the inheritance devouring greedily, 19 And you love wealth with exceeding love. 20 Nay! When the earth is ground to powder, 21 And comes your Lord, and angels row on row, 22 and Hell is made to appear on that Day, then man will be mindful, but what will being mindful then avail him? 23 He will say, “Alas – if only I had sent some good deeds ahead, during my lifetime!” 24 On that Day no one will punish as He punishes, 25 nor will any bind as He binds. 26 O soul that art at rest! 27 Return unto thine Lord well pleased and well-pleasing. 28 "Enter then among My votaries, 29 And enter into My garden. 30
