Nay, verily: By the Moon, 32 By the night when it departs. 33 And by the dawn when it brightens, 34 Indeed, the Fire is of the greatest [afflictions] 35 A warning unto humankind 36 Whoever of you desires to progress or lag behind. 37 [On the Day of Judgment,] every human being will be held in pledge for whatever [evil] he has wrought 38 except the Companions of the Right. 39 [dwelling] In gardens [of paradise,] they will inquire 40 concerning the sinners, 41 “What drove you to Hell?” 42 They will reply, "We did not pray, 43 and we did not feed the needy. 44 And we have been wading with the waders. 45 "And we used to deny the Day of Judgment, 46 "Until there came to us (the death) that is certain." 47 And so, of no benefit to them could be the intercession of any that would intercede for them. 48 WHAT, THEN, is amiss with them that they turn away from all admonition 49 like frightened donkeys 50 running away from a lion? 51 Aye! every one of them desireth that: he should be vouchsafed scrolls expanded. 52 Nay! but they do not fear the hereafter. 53 No! Indeed, the Qur'an is a reminder 54 So, whoever wills may benefit from it. 55 And they will not remember, except that God wills; He is worthy to be feared, -- worthy to forgive. 56
